I’m off on a little vacation tomorrow and like any bookaholic, selecting the books I’ll be taking with me is an important part of the packing process! For the most part it’s easy – I just pack my Sony e-reader with a good selection of books on it and I’m set! But, for the actual air-travel portion of the trip I like to have a ‘plane-book’ with me.
What is a plane-book you ask? Well, basically it’s a small, light-read book. Physically small and light so it’s easy to stash, read and hold while I’m juggling an armload of other stuff. With all the line-ups and waiting involved with flying, I like to be able to pull my book out and read in line, and don’t want to lug around anything too heavy. And I always pick something fluffy and easy to read because I find air travel very stressful, and you’re interrupted so often that I can’t get into anything too involved. I opt for a physical book because they don’t tell you to turn it off during the no electronics portion of the flight, and there’s no flicking it off and on when you’re reading for a minute here and there in between security checks.
My ‘plane-book’ for this trip will be The Titan’s Curse (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #3) by Rick Riordan. It fits all my criteria for a plane-book perfectly!
So, what kind of books do you like to travel with? Do you have preferences for the plane? The pool/beach? Do you bring extra books with you, or just one and buy more along the way if needed?

I just used The Titan’s Curse as my plane book last week. And it is my favorite of the PJ series so far. It was such an easy read I had to pick up book 4 for the plane ride home.
My issue with a “plane book” is that it has to be really interesting or I shouldn’t even bother bringing a book to read. I am too easily distracted by people, tv/movies, and my ipod…
Yay! I’m glad to hear that this will be the best PJ book so far!
I’m easily distracted by the TV’s right on the back of the seat in front of you, but I’m so short I can never see the screen when it’s an in-flight movie on the shared screens.
I agree with you about having a physical book. It’s nice to be able to read as the plane is taking off and landing. My travel book needs to be fun, interesting, and something I’m really in the mood to read. Physically light also helps. On my recent trip to Florida I read Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang on the way there and Carol Burnett’s book This Time Together on the way back. They were books I had been wanting to read since I bought them, but with book club and library books to be read I waited until my trip.
I should be able to pick up the 2nd Percy Jackson book from the library soon. I’m looking forward to it.
I used to belabor that before I got a Kindle…now I have no worry at all about choosing the wrong book…I just hate the time on the plane when I have to turn my reader off…
I love my Kindle and am not bothered so far with the time to switch off etc.
If it is quick flights I recommend a book in Verse by Lisa Schroeder, they are amazing.
I tend to bring 2 books with me. I usually pick books that I haven’t gotten around to reading. The first time I brought an air plane book with me was Twilight, which isn’t the lightest book lol. But lately I’ve learned to keep it light.
I’m going on vacation in a month and I have no idea what book to bring with me! I don’t want anything that’s intense!
Sounds crazy I know, but I am much more of a big chunky book traveller. I know its annoying to carry around, but I so prefer proper books to ebook, and I want one that will last me as long as possible.
